Inclusion: A View From Exclusion

Collage Arts have collaborated with Haringey Learning Partnership (HLP) on joint inclusion projects with young people over the past year and a half. We have developed a bespoke music production studio environment at Collage Artspace 2 for students to access industry professionals and resources to make music and apply their creativity in a non-formal learning setting. We strive to support the student in meaningful ways through individual care and attention, interest in the work produced and the ideas behind it, recognising the transferable skills gained, and inviting sharings in front of peers and mentors.

This year, HLP was pleased to work with deep:black and Collage Arts to create the film ‘Inclusion: A View from Exclusion’ exploring the impact of exclusion from school on young people’s mental health. The fourteen-minute film has been shared internationally and has helped professionals to consider alternatives to exclusion from school but also how best we can support those young people (and families) who do face exclusion.

The film was screened to an invited audience of students, teachers, youth leaders and youth workers followed by a panel discussion on 14 July 2022 at McQueens Theatre.

The Social Enterprise Support Fund, recently awarded to Collage Arts by Big Issue Invest and The National Lottery Community Fund, will help to expand the open access alternative Music Production provision over the next year and support 40 more local young people who are looking for skills, recognition and support whilst facing real life challenges.
