Pianist Simon Purcell has performance credits as leader and sideman dating back to the mid 80’s, including appearances with the likes of Red Rodney, Kenny Wheeler, Eddie Henderson and Jean Toussaint. During the late 80’s and early 90’s his fluent and inventive playing could be heard with a wide variety of artists as well as his own bands, which have included the likes of UK artists Julian Arguelles, Christine Tobin and Steve Watts. In addition to being a performer of some skill and invention, Simon is also a well established and highly respected educator. Between 1987 and 2005 he was professor of jazz piano at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and was appointed Head of Jazz at Trinity Laban Conservatoire in September 2005 (retiring from that position late last year) and in 2006 received the prestigious Parliamentary Jazz Award for Jazz Educationalist of the Year.
