Collage Arts presents Jyotsna Srikanth and Bangalore Dreams.

Bangalore Dreams features one of Europe’s leading violinist from the Carnatic Classical tradition, Jyotsna Srikanth. An evening not to be missed by lovers of classical, contemporary and Jazz music.

Indian violinist Jyotsna Srikanth’s first experience of violin music was life-changing. At a concert in Bangalore when she was five, so taken was she by the instrument that when she got home she ran to the kitchen cupboard, dragged out two brooms and started scraping them together to try and recreate the sound she’d just heard.

“My mother thought I’d gone mad,” she says. “But I was desperate to hear that sound again,” she recalls.

Jyotsna, who is also a trained pathologist, cites Stephane Grappelli as one of her main influences.

She will be joined by Shanti Paul Jayasinha on trumpet, with keyboard and drums (to be confirmed).

They promise the audience a unique mix of her Carnatic techniques (South Indian Classical Music) and expression with jazz, rock and grooves.

On her album of the same name released in 2015, Jyotsna Srikanth’s sonorous violin sings out the vivid melodies and redolent ragas of her Bangalore homeland twisted through with jazz. ‘Bangalore Dreams’ is Jyotsna’s meditations on a theme of encounters; east meets west, ornamentation meets groove, India meets jazz.

Jyotsna’s distinctive approach to harmony pays deep respect to the ancient Carnatic tradition whilst curling in at the sides to softly accommodate traditional jazz changes.
